This was the prettiest port so far. The region has
similarities with the English Lake District and the Italian lakes. TSH and Diva
saw an excellent sunrise over the mountain peaks and caught an early glimpse of
the dramatic snow-capped Osorno volcano. There were even better views of the volcano during the
excursion, this time across Lake Llanquihue.
This area
had a lot of German immigrants during the second part of the 19th
century, and their influence can be seen in the chalet-style houses and neat
gardens. There are many mountain peaks here and most seem to be volcanic. There
are said to be 1000 active volcanoes in Chile.
The excursion included a stop in the
attractive small town of Puerto Varas and another one near a field with llamas
and alpacas. The guide said that the white ones were llamas and the black and
brown ones were alpacas. Do any zoologists know if this is true?
There are still sightings of marine
animals but it is not always clear what they are. One sea-lion was spotted
sitting on the lower portion of the bow of the Silver Spirit.
Dinner was with Christiane, a member of
the crew whom TSH and Diva have known for a number of years. She is now HR
manager on the Silver Spirit.
